1. King Harald, his two sisters and their mother, the Swedish born Crown princess Martha, lived during WW II in USA. The American opinion was that Norway had given in to easy to Nazi-Germany. The Norwegian opinion after the war was that the Crown princess had done little good for Norway. Shortly after the war, Martha fell severely ill and died in 1954. Therefore, King Haralds main memories of his mother is from their stay in US.

2.Recently the Princess has been acknowledged for her contribution to Norway, amongst others her quiet diplomacy towards President Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor, which lead to his speech: Look to Norway, a tribute to the Norwegian war effort with its enormous ship tonnage.
-
3. «If there is anyone who still wonders why this war is being fought, let him look to Norway. If there is anyone who has any delusions that this war could have been averted, let him look to Norway; and if there is anyone who doubts the democratic will to win, again I say, let him look to Norway.»
The King had unveiled a similar statue outside the Norwegian Embassy in Washington. His feeling now was that of a son who had brought his mommy’s legacy back from exile. “She had come home.”

This song is Norw. Folklore Trad., the lyrics is by Per Sivle and was written in 1877, the melody in 1907. Very touching lyrics, P. Sivle lead a tragic life. He was an orfan, these lyrics are interpreted as his wiev of a better excistens. Translated:
The first song I ever got to hear
Was mothers song by my cradle
The soft words went to the heart
They could silence the cry
They cradled me so peculiarly
so quiet and soft to sleep
they showed me a wonderful way
up from our little cottage

This is a good ol' traditional song, Den Fyrste Song, but it went well with this unveiling. It's about 50 years or so old i think.

This is a traditional song. Called Den Fyrst Song.
For en fantastisk sang! Kongen kunne ikke ha fått en flottere sang til minne om slik en anledning! Lenge leve kongen!

The song is called 'Den fyrste song eg höyra fekk - The first song I ever heard', its a song from a childs view about its mother, and the child through life thinking about its mothers influence in everything. It ends with the now old person still hearing its mothers voice from the grave, with guidance and comfort.
An extremely touching song that moved the King deeply, as is visible.
