Nice ;) I'm looking to do an effect similar to this. I'm using 3ds max 2012. Can max do it without the plugin?

Try Krakatoa for the dust! I am blown away by how fast it is and how small of file sizes it creates! Of course, if you're familiar with fumefx, then by all means use that.

Thanks all for keeping the good comments on my works.
I do apologize to those who wants to see a tutorial about this. I started quite a demanding job not so long ago thus my free time is basically gone.
To put it short, anything that deals with pushing the geometry outwards is done by checking the distance from the point helper is done with a thinking particles setup (which is a plugin for max by Cebas). The UI is just a script UI I wrote which has reaction controllers to the TP setup.

To understand how it works you need to understand the basics of Thinking Particles first. The Cebas forum has a lot of free materials. Also as I mentioned before Hristo Velve and Mihai Panait tuts are great. (Google their names for the URL). If I continue to work on this I'll try to record some wips and post it here.

@drifta321 Google "Mihai Panait - ground cracking". Will lead to a tut he published few months ago.. Not exactly how I did it but the result is almost the same.
