The audience was invited to a work-in- progress showing of ANN, the second solo of a four-city, international, interdisciplinary performance, Four Mad Humours, choreographed and directed by Gerry Trentham. The audience entered a gallery like antichamber with screens of images of the four humours, four soloists and four cities, both pre-recorded and real-time projections, by Jamie ONeil. They then followed a red carpet past the soloist Amy Taravella in early transformation into her early 20th century character ANN. As they passed into their audience seats through the scrim they saw ANN taking over the performer Amy. ANN then entered the stage space, pulled the red carpet out, closed the scrim, captured the audience in the theatre and began her dance of body and voice. ANN fell and rose into the depths and heights of the sanguine (air-like) humour to the vocals of opera singer Patricia Kern, the photography of Jeremy Mimnagh and Gerry Trentham, projections by Jamie ONeil, images by Michael Stecky, in a costume by Ann Emo and lights by Dyan OConnell. Amy Tarvellas performance, refined with out side eye and coach Heidi Strauss, allowed the audience to see ANNs extra ordinary journey to where many ordinary people go ...... but few are seen.
Amy Taravella is a profound dancer, and she can belt a few notes, too! Everything is so crazy and beautiful, the arms flowing with the Merry-Go-Round is beautiful, so tense and cathartic. Nice work Gerry, much love and respect to you both.
