@LadyMiss74 The first time when Roman is mentioned is in 1354 in a letter of the Pope, were we appears with both names Olahi and Romani.

@RamanulRoman Still, Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos also uses name "romani" in the De administrando imperio for descendants of Roman Empire's colonists especially for those brought by Diocletian But, Kekaumenos identifies Vlachs with Besii (for south of Danube) and Dacians (for North of Danube)

Romania is a derivative of romanus, as the latter is of Roma; as latinus ( "Latin" ) is of Latium. It was under Caracalla that the famous Edict named Constitutio Antoniniana was issued, extending the right of Roman citizenship to all the free townsmen of the Empire. Thenceforth all citizens of the Empire could be called Romans (see E.R. Curtius – 1991)
