Well, since the whole thing takes place on or near the shores of Carthage, having the action centre on a sandy beach makes sense.
Also, I suspect this production may have involved Pierre Audi, and he's got a thing for The Elements - water, fire, sand, what have you.
Am I right, bartgeorge? Which production is this?
