  • It's a really rewarding hobby! I started off using an old grill, sticking a brake drum in the middle (to keep the fire from burning a hole in the thin grill metal) and using an old shop vac as a blower. Definately not the most elegant solution, but all you need is some way to get the coal hot enough to heat your metal, and something that can contain those hot coals. A book that I bought that gives great info to a start up blacksmith is called "The New Edge of the Anvil". check that out.

  • Good video! but i have a slight notice, dont put your thumb on the shaft of the hammer like that, its really bad as you can develop serious injuries and you hand and your wrist, besides that its an awsome video ! :D

  • Thanks for the compliment. I typically switch thumb position based on what sort of work I'm doing. In my early endeavors, I read something about thumb position and that keeping the thumb on top of the hammer in line with the shaft created more precise blows. I'm sure I'll be paying more attention to that now though. The last thing I want to do is damage my hand!

    Thanks for the tip!

  • I'd like to try my hand in blacksmithing but im not sure about a design for a forge or even what size hammer and anvil to start with... I'm going to get some books first chance I get and read up on it for sure!

  • when i was in the philippines i watched an old man forge a fishhook out of a spring over a fire in the back yard with hand billows. brought this to mind if you want it bad enough and know how to make it then go for it. oh also good choice of music loved it.

  • Thanks for the video.

  • yes, it would be a big pity of you cant forge any more as many people thankfully want to keep the craft alive
