I wish I was in High School when you were. I think Asian pop has been tainted with the "not cool" brand, and it shits me. People in my school just really can't accept that I like Asian pop, it's like it's the devil to them, and they need me to justify myself. They seem to constantly tie it to "You want to be Asian". Which is bullshit. And unfortunately, I think it's only further pushed by the fact that my best friend is the only Asian in our year level.

And generally... They're all hipsters.

Ok I'm like old and really really enjoy my asian music and get those looks and comments too from workers and some family. But, I'm so happy with it all. Narrow minde people are everywhere and they are the reason our world is as it is!!!

I have learne so much in the last 12yrs and would not change it. And my stepson is stationed in Korean and he has to learn Hungul. LOL So live your life because when all is said and done you only have you in the end so enjoy you!!!LOL

Sucks that i'm judged for it and am labelled a "fangirl". Yes, this so much. I used to always get ridiculed for liking kpop, and anime because I'm caucasian. They would say I'm an asian wannabe and I just like it because most of my friends (who were asian) liked it. For a long time I would hide the fact that I liked kpop and anime because of it too... I even felt embarassed... but now I just don't care. I feel that people who are willing to hate someone or judge someone (in a negative way) based on the genre of music they listen to are pathetic.

Great topic. I think it's a unique thing in American highschool or social scene where it's cool to "diss" certain things in order to look superior or individualistic. I'm not sure if this is a thing in Western culture in general, but it's not quite the case in Asia. At least not to that extreme.

@GypsyKundi I have used the Ninja Turtle example before. As a small kid you like Ninka Turtles (sub Barbies/Power Rangers or whatever), then when are like 10-13 it becomes "baby stuff" and totally LAME, and then suddenly you hit an age where it is cool again. You aren't afraid of actually being a baby, therefore it is not threatening for you to like "baby stuff". Really interesting...

I feel strongly about this issue. Good job. I have found that as I have gotten more confident, I have been more positive about things because I care less if I was allowed to like things. That is why is it cool for little kids to like things, but older kids (now having social awareness but not yet knowing where they stand) judge and scoff at everything, but when they mature (some at 16, other 18, others 45) they can enjoy everything again.

Many of us have that one artist that opened us into the world of J/K Pop/Rock. Who that artist is will be different for all of us; but we all have someone.

For me, my thanks go to Gackt. Much like Linzer, I discovered Gackt in Jr year of High School. Gackt would not only become my favorite; but through Gackt I was able to jump into Malice Mizer and through Malice Mizer, I discovered the Visual Kei genre.

Again, we all have different artists to thank but that's who I'll thank.

Ahem, yes, but then again, I grew up in the same town as them (which isn't very multi-cultural) but I've always been extremely accepting of different cultures. And it wasn't my family, because the issue of race never came up in our house, yet I still managed to have these ideas of acceptance

So, that's not really an excuse for them, haha. I think they just need to grow up.
