  • Gitlis isn't afraid to sound different. Even in today's modern times, when people wouldn't dare to sound like this, he goes out and does what he does. And it speaks straight from the heart.....most of the things he does is spontaneous, but not the kind of spontaneous that comes from a student. His mind is always thinking of new phrasing opportunities and how to make his violin "sing". He is at the twilight of a long and illustrious career. I love him.

  • realize that Ivry is over 80 years old here. I think this is unbelievable!!!

    each my students...

but oh God ,this is what violin playing is about,

    amazing.

  • Excellent pianist!! What is her name?

  • I agree, amazing violinist...and this at 80+....a true artist, and yes, the pianist has to be congratulated on her work here also, to follow Ivry so well! pity one has to get old, but to play lke this, well.....:-)

  • Yes very much from the heart...nothing else ...very deep and emotional...touching...striking !

  • how old is this vid?

  • @Underheifetz The piece is called "Gypsy Airs" because it's based off of, obviously, gypsy airs. To be truly authentic in that style requires a sense of freedom and change. Sarasate took these liberties in his compositional interpretation of the traditional airs, and Gitlis has done the same in his musical interpretation. If something were lost in this interpreatation, I'd agree with you, but since the emotion is carried unbroken throughout the piece, I have to (respectfully) disagree with you.
