This is a short introduction to using the patch modeling tools in 3ds max. I'm using version 9 for the vid, but this goes back a ways and is in all the recent versions. I've found patch based modeing to be very useful for a lot of things in Max, but especially as a base for high poly mechanical and organic forms.
Another video will follow showing an actual application of this.
Please pardon the mic pops on the "p" sounds in the first 30 seconds of the vid.
Do you mind me asking how you're able to make such quick selections? I mean aside from the tool itself--you wouldn't happen to be using a tablet pen or just a nice mouse would you?

@pocketmarrow If you mean the part where I add in edges and such to the box before subdivision, its all hotkeys. I have one bound to "select edge ring", another to "select edge loop" and another for "connect" to easily make splits.
I do have a tablet, but I don't use it for hard surface modeling, just sculpting, and re-topo stuff. My keyboard and mouse are the cheapest wireless set that logitech makes, and they're like at least 5 years old. :) Nothing special.
