Here is my arrangement of 'Ghost Riders In the Sky'. The organ is a Clavia Nord C1 - a Hammond B-3 clonewheel organ.
Nord C1 Registrations and Settings:
Upper 88 8000 000. Chorus C2. Percussion On, Soft, Fast, Third.
Lower 84 8000 000. Not used.
Bass lower manual 80.
Leslie simulator Stop position.
Equalizer Off.
Overdrive/Drive Off.
Reverb Hall, Soft, 50%.
Tonewheel mode Vintage 2 (high level of tonewheel crosstalk and cable leakage artefacts).

The sound is recorded line out from the organ. No additional external effects, external amplifiers or speakers are used.

The song was written in 1948 by Stan Jones. It tells of a cowboy who has a vision of red-eyed, steel-hooved cattle thundering across the sky, being chased by the spirits of damned cowboys. One cowboy warns him that if he does not change his ways, he will be doomed to join them, forever "trying to catch the Devil's herd across these endless skies". Jones said that he had been told the story when he was 12 years old by an old cowboy friend. The story resembles the northern European mythic Wild Hunt.

  • another of my childhood faves!

  • Hi przwll

We should nurture our childhood faves :-)

There are countless of recordings of this classic.

The two versions that I like the most are

Vaughn Monroe's version recorded 1949. You can easily find it here at YouTube.

My favourite: The Ventures version, called 'Riders In The Sky', recorded 1961 (not any of their later versions). You can find it here at YouTube, uploaded by 'XenaWoman12'.

My version of this song are inspired by both of them I believe.

  • Great Stuff Again!

After viewing your Green Onions, I checked what else you may have posted.

Kind of spooky on the tunes that you like.

Thanks again for doing this post. I'm going to put this one on my list to learn also.

    Pete

  • Thanks Pete!

With spooky I hope you mean we now and then got kind of same preferences in music :-)

When you go for learning Ghost Riders, I throw my first general advice at you, unsolicited: first focus to have the left hand rhythm and pattern really ingrained, then start adding the right hand. The left hand is The Boss.

    Keep swinging,
