On Thanksgiving Day, the Gospel World, as well as the field of music, lost a true pioneer. Mrs. Frances Steadman-Turner. She was born in North Carolina on July 31, 1915 and she moved to Baltimore, Maryland at a young age.

She had a very rich musical background, starting out with a family group, The Steadman Sisters. The group consisted of Frances Steadman and her aunts. Later on, she joined Mary Johnson Davis' group and she can be heard on several recordings, including "Satisfied With Jesus, in which she takes the lead. Years later, in the late 1940's/early 1950's, Frances Steadman joined the Clara Ward Specials, and eventually became a Famous Ward Singer. She can be heard on many recordings and has done lead for many songs, including "Hark The Voice," "I Know It Was The Lord," "I'm Going Home," "We're Gonna Have A Time," and numerous others. In 1958, she became one of the founding members of the Stars of Faith, and continued to carry the name well into the 1990's.

To the family and friends of Frances Steadman, keep your head up and be encouraged. I hope that you all will enjoy my tribute to this GREAT Gospel legend! In this presentation, you will hear a song recorded live during the 1970's with the Stars of Faith. Frances Steadman is singing lead to "Steal Away." The arrangement is unique and it's one of my favorites from this concert.

Take care and God Bless,
Dwayne (a.k.a Rowoches)

  • Great Song!

  • A beautiful tribute to Sister Thunder

  • this is beautiful--real, old school singing and the breakout on this is just funky. also, i'm sure you probably have it posted, but the one i love by her is "swing low, sweet chariot." other than her voice, which is awesome and magnificent, the little arrangement on that one is hot. i listen to that one regularly.

  • What a voice. She's always been one of my favorites. Great post Roweches.

  • @Gaylel1 Amen to the highest! She truly helped Pave The Way. Blessed are they that sing for they pray twice.

  • all i can say is thank you, thank you, thank you and god bless you. you have a gift...

  • Thanks for this post

  • She certainly did her part to inspire God's people.

  • Another artist the kids need to learn about. If it was not for her, it would not be any Shirley, or Tye or even Kierra. Let's cherish our legends while they still are here, meaning Dorothy and Shirley and Tina.

  • I can just hear Francis, Marion, Clara,

and Kitty rejoicing in being with the Lord

    together again. Thanks for posting.
