http://dcwi.com/dulcimer - Charlie plays Wildwood Flower on the mountain dulcimer. Written in 1860 by Maud Irving with music by Joseph Philbrick Webster, the original title was I'll Twine 'Mid the Ringlets. It was made famous by the Carter Family, and later Woody Guthrie used the melody for his song, The Ruben James. Great video for beginners to learn this song, as frets and fingering are clearly visible. The dulcimer is made of 150 year old Indiana tulip poplar wood, and features hummingbird sound holes and Grover tuning pegs. This is the 554th Appalachian or lap dulcimer Charlie has built. Charlie has built over 100 hammered dulcimers and has written an instructional book on how to build them, entitled "Hammer Dulcimers - How I Build the Things."

  • Besides using your finger to press the strings down, you can also use a "noter" which is a short piece of dowel rod. It could be birch or any other wood. A good size might be anywhere from 1/4" to 3/8" in diameter and 2.5 to 3.5 inches in length. You can play around with the size and find what feels right to you. Using a noter is especially good for someone who is just beginning or anyone with tender fingers.

  • Hello Charlie: Good to see your still at it. I bought your hammered dulcimer book a couple of years ago and built 3 16/15 instruments. They turned out fantastic!! I'm trying to sell one on ebay right now. I would like to build at least a few more, it has been a great experience and a lot of fun. you can see my instrument on YouTube on "cobbleup's channel". Have a good day and many more. Thanks: Del

  • Is there anything else you can use on the strings besides your fingers.or do you wear calluses on them..i play keyboard....easier on the fingers...but ive been watching people play this dulciimer...am wondering in i could play it..some make it look easier then others do..even though you made mistakes same as me..you still make it look easy.

  • I loved it!!! I have trouble playing a song through twice, without goofing, when I'm trying to record!! sounded real nice.
