View from a Cessna 172. Pinal Airpark (KMZJ) is about 20 miles Northwest of Tucson. You can see a sea of tails amongst the cactus and scrub brush south of I10 as you drive past the Pinal Airpark Rd exit. The airport was built in 1942 as the Marana Army Air Field. It was used for training during WWII. During the Vietnam War Era the CIA used the field for its airline operations, most notably Intermountain Airways and Air America. Hollywood based a movie off this activity called Air America (If you havent seen it, its worth renting) The facility is currently operated by Evergreen Aircraft Maintenance Facility and Silverbell Army Heliport. Evergreen provides heavy maintenance services and civilian commercial aircraft storage (boneyard). Due to the dryness of the desert (low corrosion) and cheap land, this is an ideal place to store aircraft. On the ramp infront of the hangar youll see the Dreamlifter (B747 LFC), an extensively modified 747-400. Most of these airplanes belonged to Northwest Airlines. Unfortunately many of these planes will be scrapped.

This is merely a storgae facility where 747s are mantained and modified, some are scraped for parts so that other like the Dream lifter and Super tanker can be built.
Cash for clunker program, even a airline company can recieve $4500 from the aircraft they trade in and go with the most fuel effecy newer aircraft. :P
That's a depressing place. I've personally witnessed the last flight of a 737 on it's last approach into there. I thought maybe they'd go around once for ol times sake or cock the wings on the way in. Nothing doing.
