Here is the trailer of the seminal noir classic, "This Gun for Hire" (1942), which the Halliwell Film Guide described as a melodrama with "an authentic edge and strangeness to it". Alan Ladd made his film debut playing Phillip Raven, a damaged, cold-hearted man who has become a hire killer as a way of dealing with the demons that haunt him. Veronica Lake starred as Ellen Graham, the girlfriend of a cop who becomes involved in an an espionage plot to uncover Fifth Columnists. Robert Preston played her detective boyfriend and Laird Cregar played the villain with no stamach for violence who makes the foolish mistake of double-crossing Raven. The film was directed by Frank Tuttle and was based on a book by Graham Greene.
The pairing of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake proved to be such a popular combination that Paramount Pictures teamed them together in two other Forties noir classics, "The Glass Key" (1942) and "The Blue Dahlia" (1946).
