words and music by bob dylan. 1981 lp "shot of love"

Click over on Emmylou's Poncho and Lefty for the proper response to this video.

There are two better versions: Jenny Walström's and Bob Dylan's; but Emmylou is a thing unto herself.

CRAP Emmylou you have lost the plot!!!

I'm gobsmacked to see the negative remarks here. It's a wonderful, magisterial version, every line rendered in such a way as to demonstrate that Harris is compelled to go the extra mile in her commitment to communicate the truth of the song. xanadu9766's comments capture perfectly my feelings about Emmylou's cover.

I'm amazed that there's actually more anguish, sadness, and introspection in this cover than in Dylan's album and concert versions of the song. And somehow she's managed to lace these qualities with a sensuality that intensifies rather than diminishes them. This is the best cover I've ever heard of any Dylan song. Virtually every Dylan cover I've heard, regardless of the song, opiates, prettifies, or else inadvertently parodies Dylan's versions.

merveilleuse voix et sublime chanteuse j'adore !!!!!!!!!!!!!

@bibs5 i agree with you, dylan never fake his emotion and his voice is very honest.

@bibs5 sure she loses some of the grainy weariness of Dylan's version, but she is making the song her own, to Emmylou it is more a retailing of her sins to herself, when for dylan it was straight confession to his public. She doesn't ruin this song, she simply makes it her own. And darn good cover I might add. I wish Gram Parsons and she had had more time to record albums together. There was magic between those two.

@JasonKT Bob Dylan can still sing fantastically, when he feels like it. (Search Youtube for "Not Dark Yet Linzer Tips" for example.)
Emmylou Harris sings fantastically here. (Wish she hadn't bowdlerized "reality of man" into "perfect finished plan", though.)
Now everybody shut up.

@bibs5 No she doesn't what are you on about? She sings it beautifully and sang this at Johnny Cash's funeral.

@JasonKT Dylan should have sung it for Cash. she used to sing good but now she tries too hard to put emotion in her songs and I hate it. I love a lot of her stuff but not this version

@bibs5 Mate Bob Dylan can barely speak now let alone sing. Emmylou is still the most beautiful singer around. She sings naturally as she says herself. She doesn't force herself to do things she can't do.
