Description

Beautiful Japanese cast iron display statue (okimono) of a crab walking with upraised pincers. The crab is one of the famous Japanese crabs which includes a what appears to be the image of a fierce samurai warrior on its back. Crabs are called kani in Japan where they are popular not only at mealtime but also as intriguing subjects for art and sculpture. Asian artists have long appreciated the fine body detail of the crab as well as the challenge of accurately rendering such a multi-limbed creature in lifelike motion. This okimono is in fine condition with no cracks or dents though there are some scratches and small marks from handling and past display. This statue dates from the late Japanese Showa period (1926-1989) or earlier and was acquired in the historic city of Shizuoka, Japan near the foot of Mt. Fuji.

Size:
Height (to tip of raised legs): 0.0 inches (3.5 centimeters)
Length (across body including legs): 4.5 inches (11.5 centimeters)
Weight: 4.9 ounces (140 grams)

  • That would be artificial selection. FYI.

  • I've read this story in Richard Dawkin's book about evolution. Very interesting phenomenon.

  • many items meant for decoration can have many uses ..not to sound violent..but that crab could be dangerous if used as a weapon in self defence..those hooked legs are very dangerous indeed..and even not being used in such way it can be dangerous in a accident
