This was a suprising sight from my hi-rise window on Friday, March 30th, 2007, at about 7pm. About a hundred bicycles were riding down a street. I don't know who they were, but am guessing they could be a "Chicago Critical Mass" bike advocacy ride. See CriticalMass.org. http://www.ChicagoCriticalMass.org

  • @highlandsh, legally you are probably correct that they are blocking traffic. According to Chicago ordicance 9-52-050 Riding in single file required: Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride other than single file except on paths or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. However, sometimes an occasional bending of rules can broadly communicate a valuable social message.

  • A hundred ? at least 5 x that number.

  • They're not blocking traffic. They ARE traffic. After peak oil, you might see more of this.

  • this was obviously a organized ride!

  • @highlandsh traffic doesn't go that slow purposefully, or blocking all lanes purposefully. so yes, they are blocking traffic.

  • Given the date and time, I think you're probably correct. Critical Mass takes place after work hours on the last Friday of the month.

  • Looks like a Critical Mass ride.
