Wow, really scary! I'm from Christchurch, so I have experienced a few earthquakes in the last year, but they were all quite short (even though some seemed to go on for ages). I can't imagine how scary it must be to experience an earthquake that goes on for several minutes!
There are two scales. the magnitude is a log scale, so there are no limits in either direction, and this depends on the energy released in the quake.
the intensity scale depends on where you are. 1-3 is barely felt, 8+ is BIG

My heart goes out in empathy to the people of Japan. I am in Christchurch, New Zealand. Since september last year we have had over 7000 earthquakes - previously I had only ever felt one or two in my lifetime. Our first big quake was 7.1 and we all learned quickly how to secure all our bookshelves etc to the walls and surprisingly it works. I am sad about alot of the previous comments here, hugely disrespectful to people surviving the ongoing earthquakes and mourning those lost in the disasters.
