Pompei

La mattina del 24 agosto del 79 d.C.Plino il Giovane la descrive così:
"Una nube nera e terribile, squarciata da guizzi serpeggianti di fuoco, si apriva in vasti bagliori di incendio: erano essi simili a folgori, ma ancora più estesi ...
Dopo non molto quella nube si abbassò verso terra e coprì il mare...
Scese la notte, non come quando non v'è luna o il cielo è nuvoloso, ma come quando ci si trova in un locale chiuso a lumi spenti...
Udivi i gemiti delle donne, i gridi dei fanciulli, il clamore degli uomini...
Riapparve un debole chiarore, che non ci sembrava il giorno, ma l'inizio dell'approssimarsi del fuoco."

On the morning of 24 August 79, Pliny the Younger describes it thus:
"A black and dreadful cloud, unveiled by leaps winding fire, opened in broad flashes of fire: they were similar to lightning, but even more extensive.
After not much time a cloud is lowered to the ground and covered the sea.
The night fell, not when there is no moon or the sky is cloudy, but as when in a closed room off to light.
Heard the moans of women, the screams of children, the clamor of men.
Reappeared a weak light, that there seemed to be the day, but early on the approach of the fire. "
