@zcustard That is untrue, the egg would still have hit the rider if it was thrown down. The point is the horizontal induced velocity from its carrier. As drag is negligible in this instance, the horizontal velocity of the egg remains relatively unchanged and lands on the rider's head.

Probably. I guess it also wouldn't have worked if they stopped the trolley at the exact moment the egg left his hand
