For almost 10 years, Jay Shafer has re-invented the tiny home. Tumbleweed homes are complete homes with kitchen, bathroom, closet space, and sleeping loft in less than 120 sqaure feet.

  • Reminds me of some shrimp boats you have to save space on these.I see these McMansions and wonder what are these people thinking who needs all that space what are you trying to prove? How much time do you really spend at your home anyway. Unless you are not well you will be away from home a lot. I want to go back to 8 hour work days what happened to that life? Folks work just to work and they don't own a thing in the end they get sick and have it all reposessed never owning a thing vanity.

  • I have owned a 3200 sq foot home a 1800 sq foot home and a rv with one small bedroom about 18-20ft long on the ocean happiest days of my life.Small is cozy and if you are a private independent type of person tint homes are the way to go.

  • I want one....but can't decide which one. I won't build I will buy it.

  • The beauty of these homes is that you can buy wonderful land to live on while saving your money from it all.

  • All these micro homes and I've yet to see a comprehensive solution to one major problem.where's the bathroom???? And if you are in the middle of the woods how do you get water to bathe properly if there is no running water on the property?how do you get it there?and if there's no septic system what do you do with the waste water?I figured out how to power the house with a 12v solar system but the problem of supplying water and dealing with the waste water eludes me.any suggestions? -Nate

  • Jay , I am going to be building one of these in the arctic soon! Inuvik, NWT, Canada, which is the northernmost town accessible by road. It will take a few modifications (no propane heating because the gas freezes here, more insulation, etc.) , but I think it will be worth it!

  • what do you do with you're poop ??

  • @TumbleweedHouses Ah I see. Thank You :) Believe me, I don't mean to heckle, but for a 96 sq ft tumbleweed home how much wood would I need....that's the more pertinent question than the cost (because costs for wood vary with suppliers, i presume). If you don't mind though, could you tell me what people spend, on average, for the two mentioned wood types when building a 96 sq ft tumbleweed home?

Im buying Shafer's book because im really dead-set on building one of these as soon as possible.

  • @teched246 Regular lumber for the exterior construction & Pine for the interior.

  • @TumbleweedHouses Hmm. What's the most commonly used wood for building these homes... or better yet what did Jay spend on the wood for his first home?

  • @teched246 @teched246 It depends on the type you use.

  • @TumbleweedHouses Howdy! :) I was wondering how much the wood alone would cost to build a 96 square foot home. (?) My reason for asking is that once you have the essentials and necessities (i.e wood, windows, furnace) everthing else can wait -- it's "all downhill from there", so to speak...at least for me anyways.
