On April 13, 2009, both Harry Kalas, the legendary Philadelphia Phillies announcer, and Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, a former pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, passed away.

Kalas was sitting in the broadcasting booth in Washington a few hours before the Philly-Nationals game, when he passed out. He died at 12:30 PM. He was 73 years old.

Fidrych was apparently working on his pick-up truck when his neighbor found him dead, underneath the truck. He died 2:30 PM. He was 54.

To find out more about what happened to these two men, check out these two articles:

The song is "100 Years" by Five for Fighting, by the way.

  • Im really sad to see him go even though Im a Mets fan

  • Great song choice. I lived in the same town where Mark Fidrych grew and tragiclly died. I never met him, though I knew many people who did. He was described as a very funny, outgoing, and caring man. His un-timely death definetly put a somber tone on the town, and he will be missed here.

  • Phillies suck dick

  • Thats very true. I'm still not used to listening Tom McCarthy on CSN Philadelphia

  • Eventually, yeah, you do

But it's not easy to watch a game and not hear his voice

  • But you get over it.

  • Or when the Braves lost their announcer Chip Carey

  • Its like the Devils losing Doc or the Sabres losing RJ or the Hawks losing Pat Foley

  • Yeah, Phils games just aren't the same without Kalas

  • It's great that they have a sign for him in his hometown. A lot of people miss him.
