ACLU Concerned About Troops Assigned to US

The American Civil Liberties Union wants to know why the Pentagon has assigned a fighting unit to the United States itself.

On October 1st, the Northern Command, for the first time ever, got its own dedicated Army force.

The unit the Pentagon assigned to NorthCom is the 3rd Infantry, First Brigade Combat Team, which has spent three of the last five years in Iraq. One of its specialties is counterinsurgency.

This is a radical departure from separation of civilian law enforcement and military authority and could, quite possibly, represent a violation of law, said Mike German, ACLU national security policy counsel. Our Founding Fathers understood the threat that a standing army could pose to American liberty, he added.

German also noted that Congress has passed statutory protections to ensure that the Army could not be turned against the American people.

The ACLU is seeking documents from the Justice Department, the Pentagon, and Homeland Security that authorize the deployment of military troops for domestic purposes.

United States Northern Command is a Unified Combatant Command of the United States military.
Created on October 1, 2002 in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, its mission is to protect the United States homeland and support local, state, and federal authorities.

The support that NorthCom provides to civil authorities is limited by the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits the role of the U.S. military in civil law enforcement

There should be no assault weapons ban but we need more control, as the US supplies Mexico and Canada with guns because we have so many.

I guess I have to stand corrected I read an article and Drudge Report about the 20,000 activated troops which will be in place by 2011. It is concerning and irritating. Our Government is not telling us the truth. If home land security is so important, why dont they do something about our porous border to the south? The fact is they do not want to stop illegal border incursions. I think the whole thing stinks to high heaven.

No one should ever rely solely on their government for protection.

Remember that soldiers are individuals capable of wrong doing. If police are crooked soldiers can be as well. Were Chilean soldiers loving their country when they captured, tortured, and killed their own people?

It is good to be on guard... but lets face it; no one is going to take our guns, or post troops. It would never work. Remember, the troops you are afraid of are in the military because they love this country.

Public Law 109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122) (2), which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder."
