In 2005, Blake Snyder released a screenwriting book entitled "Save The Cat!". It explained movies in easy to understand "story beats". Celebrating Snyder's ability to dissect the myth of movies structure, and as a tribute to all he has done for screenwriters around the world, Mediajuice will showcase his innovative ideas on some of the most beloved films of all time. This week, Back To The Future! To see all the STC! tribute videos feel free to check out the STC! section on the Mediajuice website @ http://www.mediajuicestudios.com/#/savethecat/

  • @NeoTRP ...and he was a good friend.

  • @NeoTRP I don't agree with him on Memento. I also don't agree with him on his breakdown of Titanic. But what he taught me in STC was to analyse it in my own way. What Blake gave - that is more important - is the storytypes, and what they mean in terms of an emotional journey is what has really changed and improved my way of thinking. Before he died, I had the chance to argue with him some of my criticisms of his analysis of various films. He agreed with me every time. He was magnanimous...

  • @NeoTRP It's not a personal opinion? So you publicly recommend people to avoid this book on the say so of people on amazon? Look, I'm not going to defend why I believe the advice within the covers of STC - Dean Deblois (Writer/Director of How to Train your Dragon) used STC methods, and enlisted Blake to fix problem areas. Developing your skills as a writer is a personal journey. STC has been life changing for me. I'd be interested to know what you don't agree with in it. All seems logical to me

  • @NeoTRP I've read Robert McKee's 'Story' and I've attended one of his seminars. I got a lot out of it and his advice. I have got something out of all of the books on screenwriting that I have read and I have got a lot out of every conversation with every screenwriter that I have ever had. I'm sorry Neo, but when I hear people telling people vehemently to avoid the advice of someone who obviously may have something worth listening to - I can only assume that they must be an amature.

  • @NeoTRP only if you're braindead to begin with. Personally, I was terrified when I first read Save the Cat, because I thought that it would seriously beef up the competition. I wanted to burn all the books for that reason! But in all honesty, most people don't understand the point of the book at all - because they don't really understand story. Yes, you could use Save the Cat's principles and come up with something like Big Momma's House 2, or - if you're clever - something like The Godfather

  • heh, nice false victory there at midpoint!

  • This info helps leap my own ideas on a novel forward, maybe I was always drawing from these beats and story points naturally anyways...???? and I liked this movie too....

  • This is great! Love to see more!

  • Fantastic! But you're missing a step. Where's the "B Story?"
