It's kind of comforting to know that some things stand the test of
time. With guitar soloing there is the "minor pentatonic scale" that
has been a golden thread. From bb king to chuck berry to jimi hendrix,
weezer, racer x, metallica, john Mayer, angus young, zepplin, tears
for fears, not to mention every country guitar solo and a bunch of
funk solos, and of course all blues solos.
If you want to play a guitar solo, start with this 5 noted-anchor of
six-stringed brilliance. So I'm going to show you this scale, how to
use it, and let you handle all of the groupies it will attract.
One of the greatest things about guitar
Is that you can learn 1 shape and use it an any key. The pentatonic
scale is a great example. Guitarists have been doing it for at least
1/2 of a century. So, here is the most popular shape of the minor
pentatonic. We'll do it in the key of A rock! I say A "rock" because
this "minor pentatonic" scale works over A minor (sad, metal) and A
dominant (blues, country, rock) tonality (it also works for stuff in C
major).
Start with your index finger on the root note on the low E string.
This will be found on the 5th fret. Use your index finger for all the
5th fret notes.
Use your pinky finger to play the notes
On the 8th fret and ringer for notes on the 7th fret...
