I didn't think Ricky acted very well in this episode...HOWEVER, I do think he is a great actor in The Office and Extras. Especially the scene where Brent almost loses his job (that one had me crying) and the speech he makes in Extras...like magicbibledotcom already pointed out

I love Ricky Gervais. he is among my top three comedians, which includes Dave Chappelle and Stewart Lee.
and i love how he can do serious, considering how much of an amateur he was at this point in his carrer.....
