ARTIST: The Decemberists
SONG: The Engine Driver
ALBUM: Picaresque

-----
Picaresque is an album by The Decemberists released in 2005 on the Kill Rock Stars record label. It was produced by Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie.

The word "picaresque" is taken from a form of satirical prose originating in Spain, depicting realistically and often humorously the adventures of a low-born, roguish hero living by his/her wits in a corrupt society.

I think you feel that way because as a writer, you portray yourself as many roles and characters in books. This song is stating to someone: No matter who I am or what I do or the person I make myself to be, I'll love you. Despite that person not loving him back. "If you don't love me, let me go.." That's how I see this song, anyway.

I thought this sounded like a crazy mix between rem, death cab and a pinch of modest mouse. I know it's just its own thing but that's what it makes me feel.

what gets me about this song is the different professions, some rich, some poor, the man and his grandson, it's hard to explain but it seems to give depth and a sense that these feelings he sings about are universal and timeless, something people have been experiencing since time began and something we always will experience.

I think it's less of an "I'll always love you" thing and more of a "Please let me be at peace" thing. "I've written pages upon pages/trying to rid you from my bones" suggests writing as catharsis and "If you don't love me, let me go" is along the same lines - say the speaker's already in a relationship or has been in a relationship where the feelings have since faded for one another. He's saying if you don't love me, please just let me be at some measure of peace.
