Yes but at the end JOAN got the last laugh. 80 years later you say Joan Crawford and you dont need an explanation. You say Norma Shearer and people say Norma WHO????

Joan was annoyed cuz she was the only hot one in the shower...lol....thanks for posting!!

Fucking Beautifal, she is so underrated, the only thing people bring up about her these days is 'No Wire hangers' 'Mommie dearest' or obssessive cleaning, truly sad that people dont care to learn about the real Joan

This is racist. Imagine! Joan having to bathe with a black! If black women were not
maids, then they were criminals.

The only issues that were a slight turn off for me was some ideological racism floating around...Why is it that when there is a prison sequence that Afro-American people always appear, given that Blacks rarely intervene, or are seen in other social spaces? All of sudden the great Louise Beavers appears in a bit role, as a symbol to show us how far Mary Turner has "fallen from grace" in having to share shower with a Black woman. Then, Kent Douglas refers to his Japanese valet as "yellow peril"!

This a great Pre-Code - early Talkie Crawford gem! Not seen for years, we should thank WB Archives for releasing it. Joan's performance has dated little in 80 years---just shows what good direction can do. Curiously, the film does away with some of the important exposition that is in the Norma Talmadge silent version, i.e. the dept store theft. Marie Prevost and Kent Douglas are likewise great in their support of the star. Douglas, in particular, turns in a very naturalistic performance.

Wow...what gritty realism even in just this little clip. Can't wait till my copy of this arrives. Speaking of Norma Shearer, this was a role that she rejected and landed in Joan's lap. Like The Letter and Rain, Within the Law, the play on which Paid was based, the central role of Mary Turner was one of those roles actresses cut their fangs on.
Love it!
