This is the third episode of my series entitled "A Gaijin's Guide to Japan."

It's been a while since I've done one of these informational videos, so I hope I wasn't too rusty. In this episode I discuss the use, or the lack of use of credit cards in Japan. I also give a little information about the Japanese Yen and talk about how it can sometimes be confusing to a "Gaijin."

There is also an introduction to my brand spankin' new Japanese language and culture robot Cosmo. I have a feeling he's going to cause more trouble than he's worth.

My father also wanted to make a cameo in one of my videos, so I tried to write him in this episode.

Here is more information about the Japanese Yen:

The intro was made specifically for this video series by my friend ghostkid. It is a demo version of a song that he will be releasing under the Creative Commons License. So far the track is entitled:
"Don't F--- with the Mob" by ghostkid of the album Jake Versus Japan

The track "Art Now" by Alex is also licensed under Creative Commons and can be used commercially through attribution. You can find this track at:

  • This is definitely the way you've got to film the rest of your videos from now on. Nice intro, as well. Cute and silly all throughout!

  • @takeusaway3 Thanks much! I really want this series to be a good mix of entertainment and education. I really wasn't prepared for a lot of things when I first got to Japan and I want to help people that may experience the same problems.

  • i like the robot xD

can you tell us about how you got into a university in japan?

  • @kaserbot great idea! I'm putting that one on the list.

  • Have you noticed the complete lack of a "return policy" in Japan? One time I had a clerk think I was crazy to even ask it. After much pleading, she pulled out her Hello Kitty notepad and attempted to complete the return... which she couldn't figure out how to do anyways. I was just like O_O "can't you just swipe my card...?!?" Lol!

  • @emiiidesu Hahaha, that was a hysterical comment! Sadly, I never experienced trying to return something. It's really odd how Japan handles purchases, seems so old-school.

Nice video but you did not have the Ni Sen En/2,000 Yen bill. Here is my video with the 2,000 Yen bill. Thank you for your time. Osu

  • Naw I want to know about shibuya 109! XDD

I think a lot of girls would love to learn a little bit something about that place ~

    cheers jake

  • I did like your video until you spit it at me. =.=*

no jk. Are there any areas of Japan that tourists shouldn't go? I would like to go see all the little farms and mountains but I've heard that smaller towns are alot less welcoming than big metros. Would you agree with that?

  • "Robots..." lol

  • i want to visit Japan this summer.. is it hard to figure out.. like.. trains. .and stuff.. do you have like a monthly pass, or do you pay as you go?

  • Hey Jake! I'd love if you could do a video on your favorite places in Tokyo! Anyway, hope things are well where you are. :)

  • Also I would like to know. If I got a working holiday visa, what is some work I could take on?

  • What an epic father

  • Awesome video Jake! Its sad that I won't be going to Japan now...I was going to use so many of your tips. I will go next year though, for sure!
