Deer Vehicle Accidents has more then DOUBLED in state with most hunters! UPDATE

Deer populations have undergone significant increases over the last decades. This combined with the increase in the number of vehicles on the road leads to increasing DVA rates in many states.

That said, it must also be added that over half of all DVAs year-round occur during the months of November and December. In other words, during the deer hunting season! Coincidence? How about the fact that the highest daily DVA rates occur on the first day of the deer hunting season? Deer are usually very prudent in entering open spaces, such as a field or a roadway. But when hunting starts, the deer are spooked by the sudden presence of hunters in the woods, causing them to flee from the forests into traffic.

How ironic that deer hunting is hailed as a deer population reduction measure when hunting has wiped out the deers natural predators, has caused higher fawn births, and has caused higher DVAs. The game agencies send press releases putting the blame on deer overpopulation, and call for more hunting as a deer population control measure! All that - and we havent yet mentioned the Compensatory Rebound Effect. That is the phenomenon of higher births following a sudden reduction in the population.


Why do states like Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, PA, GA and TX which have the most hunters also have the most deer? Why have deer populations in these as well as other heavily hunted states steadily risen in the past three or four decades? More importantly, what are the environmental consequences of high deer populations?

From: Peaceful Parks Coalition April 25, 2005, Toronto: An Ontario Ministry of Transportation report released last year cites deer hunting as a major cause of car collisions in Ontario. The report states that 'in Ontario, higher numbers of animal-vehicle collisions were found to occur in October-December. This could be attributed to fall hunting seasons (Sept.20-Dec15), where people chase and force animals into rights of way. When animals are being shot at, they run and may venture onto highways.' The report also confirms that most wild animal collisions occur during early morning (5am-7am) or after sunset (5pm-11pm). Deer hunting is permitted one half hour before sunrise and one half hour after sunset.

Deer/Car Collision

The Erie Insurane Group, PA's second largest auto insurer, studied the effect that hunting has on car/deer collisions. They discovered that not only did accidents increase during hunting season but they increased by five times on the opening day of doe and buck season.

Harvesting for crops the veg is the end of their lives and needs to be harvested where in cases of deer they run because they want to LIVE and do not want to feel pain. When you harvest plants Gods says they are ready to be picked in the fall because the plants dies and the veggies are ready. Some like in corn and rice they are dried practically before picking in cases of animals they are alive and had many more years to live. They run because they fear pain and don't want to die.,

Where does fish and cow come into this, are you trying to take focus off the real subject?. I am vegan so I don't eat any of those stuff and I am "attacking' people who are destroying the animals I so love and plus in interest of human lives who dies every year in DVA's. I worry about my son driving in heavily hunted state and I tell them that during hunting to be very careful because there are an abundance of deer for recreational purpose and deer are running from the killers in the forest.
