Well, logically, candles give off heat when lit, the flame would give off infrared radiation; because the heat is given off by the movement of charged particles in the atoms is converted to electromagnetic waves(light from the flame). It also gives off invisible light, the thermal radiation, infrared light, so it's entirely possible that the candles would work as a makeshift "sensor bar".

I was pretty sure I explained it clearly enough in the video, and later on in the previous comments. It's all to do with infra red light, and the fact that the IR sensor is in the wiimote.
