Doug Scott was the first Briton to climb Everest. In 1967 he chose the Afghan Hindu Kush mountains for his first taste of high altitude mountaineering. In this interview with Mountain Unity he describes the excellent climbing, consistent good weather and reletively easy access which are hallmarks of the mountains of Afghanistan.
Doug speaks warmly of the hospitality of the Afghan people and suggests that the Hindu Kush may well, once again, become a major draw for climbers looking for unclimbed routes or a first taste of the Himalayan big time.
You can find out more about Doug's climbing adventures in the Hindu Kush and wider Himalayan area by reading his excellent book; Himalayan Climber. Doug has also set up a charity to support the Sherpa communities of Nepal, you can find out more at his website; www.canepal.org.uk. Check the website for details of his lecture tours, he really has some amazing stories to tell.
Mountain Unity is a not for profit organisation set up to promote climbing and trekking in north east Afghanistan. This will allow the local population to get out of the grinding poverty that has blighted their lives for decades and provide a small flame of hope to a country shattered by war.
