Taking you through my experience of this change. The Gotoh I used is model GE1996T&FRG-2 which is FAR superior to any Floyd I have played. Purchased on eBay for around $120. This is my second Gotoh switch and I have a much more in depth video on youtube of me changing an Ibanez trem on a JS model over to a Gotoh.

The brass big block is from floydupgrades.com. As of this writing 5/21/2010 the "L" shaped block DOES NOT fit this gotoh, so make sure you get the standard big block. I had to send back my "L" shaped blocks and Adam was very helpful with quick responses to me via email and exchanged them out right away/ Although the tone difference may not be as apparent on the video, it is richer/fuller with a lot more sustain and power than before. The guitar feels much sturdier and plays better as well. WELL WORTH the upgrade for the Gotoh and the brass block. It's a pretty easy upgrade. Adam from floydupgrades.com has several GREAT videos on youtube detailing the exact steps on how to do the job. I referenced them several times before doing the actual work, I recommend you do the same. His video on intonating a Floyd Rose changed my life and will give me back about 1000 hours of my life that I would have spent doing the frustrating job of intonating a Floyd the "old" way. His trem stopper pays for itself in 1 use just on intonating alone.

Everything was played through an Axe-FX ultra. The clean tone is the studio clean factory patch with the pitch turned off. The crunch, heavy and lead patches are my own based on the Diezel amp.

  • How is the bridge set. Is it on the body, completly flat? or is it somewhat raised? what tuning are you in? does it come back to tune as soon as you drop and raise the bar or do you have to pull back? nice tone btw

  • @aceeddieslash Thanks. On body, flat. I think standard tuned but don't remember.

  • @aceeddieslash flat.

  • 99, what did you not like about the original floyd rose? I want to replace the bridge on my Ibanez RG5EX1 with something solid. I am contemplating a floyd, but if the Gotoh is as reliably stable as the floyd I may try the Gotoh.

  • @Jaxx137 It's a feel thing. The OFR always feels cheap & rough to me. I've always preferred the feel of an Ibanez Edge type trem and the gotoh feels more like the IBZ to me. Great trem...very happy with it.

  • @dickdog1 you absoultely can drop a gotoh in and it works great. you have no idea what you are talking about.

  • @wowaccpass it is a natural harminic with the trem depressed and then raised. look up natural harmonics on here to get the idea of how to do them. the technique to get the scream to sound is a little more advanced.
