I remember Val when he was a teen (I was in the tournament class) and his folks ran the family restaurant really nice familly - I hated sparring with him because :) I was scared to death! But he had way better control than some whose names will go unmentioned. (Yes I was at H/Vermont, then the one near Sunset in the Tullners Gehelsen days)

Do they PERMIT sweeps in open karate tournaments today? Particularly vs. the guys who hop forward on one leg while throwing half-assed kicks? I competed in several Chicago-area tournaments in the early 70s. Pads weren't required, and you had to pull strikes over the area that a hockey mask would have covered. Otherwise, you had to hit HARD. I once received a point for decking my opponent with a backfist to the back of the head. Sweeps (even throws) were very much within the rules.

@stevieandkiki I'm a great admirer of your uncle and Shihan Kubota. Please give Val sensei (I'd use his surname if I hadn't forgotten how to spell it:)) my best regards:]

@seantubular Nah, baby. Come on over and I'll introduce you to my little friend:)

A magnificent demo of traditional karate. What a contrast between this and those who play at contemporary open tournaments, in which contestants wear costumes that don't even suggest gis, bounce like jumping beans and get points for barely half-assed techniques.
