I think it was good he didn't play sonny because he would have never played Vito in the 2nd part.

I think Robert De Niro could have done a good job, but Caan really pulled it off and I'm glad they stuck with him. De Niro did a great young Vito Corleone.

@nomibe2911 If Godfather was made today, Michael would have a black wisecracking sidekick, the 'splosions would all be CGI, the 'boring' first half an hour would be lopped off, and George Lucas would be pushing Coppola to include some giant killer ants in it. Oh I forgot, there would HAVE to be a latino woman in it who would of course take off her clothes.

Wouldn't had mind De Niro playing Sonny. I always thought Caan didn't seem Italian in the movie. He has an Irish look to him. I would have went for Robert but it worked out for both actors.

@johnjanuary7 Excellent points made. I didn't look at it like that. I think De Niro played an excellent young Vito so I rather him playing that role then sonny.
