Three and a half minute condensation of the Vitagraph film "Vanity Fair", produced and directed by Charles Kent, starring Helen Gardner, Rose Tapley, Harry Northrup, and Tefft Johnson.
Becky Sharp tries to scheme and manipulate her way to the top in this early and ambitiously scoped three-reel retelling of Thackeray's Vanity Fair.
The full-length film is available on DVD and this abridgment can be purchased on Super 8mm.
Although she is not very well known today, Helen Gardner is one of the finest actresses of early cinema. I've only seen one other of her films, the 1912 version of "Cleopatra" and she was wonderful. This was five years before Theda Bara's version which is lost.

Fascinating early effort to translate literature to the screen. Helen Gardner is a profoundly important woman in early cinema! I really enjoyed finding this hear...I only wish they could find a live pianist.
