  • We saw this behaviour some years back a few miles North of Juneau Alaska. The best information we could come up with was that diving in this way reduces the chances of each bird losing it's dinner to gulls that wait for them to surface, then steal their food. It's a safety in numbers behaviour. It looks great though - perhaps the scientist are wrong and they are just doing a Mexican Wave for fun!
