Exodus: Ultima III, for the Apple II, and the birth of Origin Systems, Inc.

The first great Ultima game (in my opinion!) and one of the main inspirations for the Dragon Quest series [and by extension, every JRPG ever].

Also the first Ultima game with support for Apple II soundcards. [Game is running in AppleWin v1.16.1.0 w/ an AE Phasor sound card [which has 12 voices, but Ultima III only supports up to the Sound 2 card, which had 6 voices].

  • Thank you for sharing! This was the first computer game I ever bought, back in 1983 for my Atari 800XL. Very cool to see the Apple version, which had more color. Sounds are similar...a true RPG classic.

  • @kirk1968 Yeah, I don't know how the Atari 800XL could run something like Rescue on Fractalus or The Eidolon, but not Ultima IV with color.. but the Apple II versions of the first five games are always going to be my favorites. The music is great in III-V, and there's something about the graphic and system limitations being overcome that make the other ports of the games less impressive.

  • Oh god I should have split the audio up to both channels, this is really annoying on headphones.

  • Ultima III was a great game. It was just so different and strange in many ways. U5 was my favorite as it was so long and had a ton of great music on the C128 but U3 and U4 rank right up there. Nothing can beat the trio of U3, U4, and U5 for me. I played them when they were new, which makes me ancient now, LOL!

  • 3, 4, and 5 are definitely the best, and 5 is absolutely my favorite as well, but the music on the Apple II version is amazing [as long as you have two sound boards, or for super awesome, a MIDI interface. Check out

  • A nice video, Karnov, but a couple tips are in order:

    1) Save your Repond spells for orcs and goblins, not thieves.

    2) When hurt, have your cleric heal the party members then head into town and walk around to recover MP, equalling more healing charges.

  • Haha, thanks. I wasn't actually attempting to beat the game though, I was working on videos of a bunch of Apple II games. My real Apple II just came in a few weeks ago, and I plan on tackling all five of the Ultimas once I get a Mockingboard [or two].

  • First 3/4 perspective game I ever played. Took a while for it to make sense to me-- it looked like people were walking around while lying down! Love the old school graphics, though.

  • Still love playing this game especially since there's a fan patch that adds the soundtrack that the apple 2 and C64 versions had plus allows you to play the game with either the intended CGA composite colour pallet(not 100% accurate yet but there pretty damn close save for the moon gates, the hills and the daemons being a bit off) which makes the game look almost identical to the Apple 2 version, or you play with with a EGA(read taken from the release of Ultima 1 and 4) or VGA tile sets.
