Of course a street vendor in Canada will take USD: Its worth MORE and they will NOT give you the exchange value, just the face value so they make out like bandits.

Yes, you're right. That's because in Canada ANY bank will exchange US currency, but few US banks will exchange Canadian currency.

Just like I'm sure those street vendors wouldn't have taken a US money order. It just wouldn't have been sensible. Has nothing to do with education.

It has nothing to do with awareness. It's called liquidity. Ever take economics. What's a street seller supposed to do with $20CAD? Go to the local forex center to exchange it for dollars? According to the deal that guy was offering, he would have made a $2 profit. Would it have been worth his time to find a forex center in midtown? No.
