Many marines are brain-washed by the USMC bureaucracy into thinking everyone thinks they are great. The Taliban in Afghanistan are not impressed nor intimidated by U.S. marines. It's one thing to put out a happy force for public consumption; it's another when you start believing your own BS (lies). The term for this delusion is called FALSE CONSENSUS EFFECT. In military operations it's extremely unwise and dangerous to be out of touch with objective reality around you--but this is exactly how most marines think (word used lightly here).
He that covers up his mistakes will not correct them and not prosper. The USMC bureacracy's con is to hide its failures in the form of deaths and maimings under ther guise of the American flag, valor and c'est la guerre excuses. "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel".
America can no longer afford arrogant marines in a huge bureaucracy that are insulated from reality and asking to be killed and lose battles due to a lack of humility and honest adaptation.
