In January 2011 Sapana, The Company of Dreams, made its debut performance in Kathmandu, Nepal. Most of the performers are trafficking survivors whom have been rescued by UK children's charity The Esther Benjamins Trust from violent Indian circuses where they had been held against their will ostensibly as "performers". Now these young people, along with a few former street children and children of prisoners from the Trust's refuge in Kathmandu, have been formed into a contemporary circus company where they have a chance to live the dreams that were sold to them by traffickers but that turned out to be lies. The young people have been trained by Western contemporary circus volunteers and the company will perform nationally and in due course internationally, ensuring the performers of proper wages, fun and, for some, catharsis. This has been filmed by Sky Neal and Kate McLarnon. The initiative has been supported by FSI Worldwide which will host the company's first international trip to Dubai in October 2011.
Beautiful.
