"In 1978 I purchased an old sea captain's house on an island in Maine. I became (and still am) completely enraptured with the sea. Summer in Maine is always special but in autumn when the tourists retreat and an island returns to its quiet, isolated existence is when I find it most endearing. I dearly love this song." (Dan Fogelberg)
" The Reach " written by Singer/Songwriters Dan Fogelberg, from "The Innocent Age" album (1981). R.I.P. Dan, thank you for the beautiful everlasting music! Thank you Amy for the Minstrel photo link, special thank to Bobby for liner notes and to many artists/photographers for their beautiful pictures and portraits of Maine!
(Lyrics)
It's Maine, and it's Autumn,
the birches have just begun turning
It's life and it's dying
The lobstermen's boats come returning
with the catch of the day in their holds
And the young boy is cold and complaining
The fog meets the beaches and out on the Reach it is raining

It's father and son,
it's the way it's been done since the old days
It's hauling by hand ten miles out from the land where their chow waits
And the days are all lonely and long and the seas grow so stormy and strong but...
The Reach will sing welcome as homeward they hurry along

(Chorus)
And the morning will blow away as the waves crash and fall
And the Reach like a siren sings as she beckons and calls
As the coastline recedes from view and the seas swell and roll
I will take from the Reach all that she has to teach to the depths of my soul

The wind brings a chill, there's a frost on the sill in the morning
It creeps through the door
On the edge of the shore ice is forming
Soon the northers will bluster and blow
And the woods will be whitened with snowfall
And the Reach will lie frozen for the lost and unchosen to row

(Chorus)

  • His home in Deer Isle, Maine at "The Reach" was next to my family's summer home there. Beautiful place...many fond memories from my childhood there.

Nice guy, came by to say hello once when I was there.

  • @patrick8675309patric How nice to hear from Dan's neighbor, he is great! Say hi to Jean for us when you see her!

  • Love this to bits! Have watched it many a time, but never been able to find the words to leave behind. Think I'll leave it to Dan........ he says everything so well - far better than I ever could.

  • @DanceTheGrid Totally agree...awesome artist...brings back great memories

  • The intricacy of the rhymes is amazing. And you can hear the ocean in it. I could never live far from the ocean, or for long outside of New England, and this song says why.

  • @cferrante I love this song and Dan Fogelberg, however, the sadness underlying the melody is what I feel when I think about Maine - it is both a paradise and a prison. I've lived my whole 16 years here, and although I love the coast and land, I have never been an accepted member of the state's tight clans, still quite alive in Down East Maine. I am an "outsider" I suppose, and being left on the outside of something your entire life is not a very nice feeling.

  • @patrick8675309patric absolutely stunning both musically and visually this man first inspired in 1982 i'm an professional musican from ireland and still can't believe we have lost this man to cancer .

  • If any songwriters want to know how to do it, listen to Fogelberg. More than outstanding.

  • This is one of Dan's best, hands down. No wonder he openly admitted he was proud of it. I've been a writer since childhood and have never produced anything this beautiful! Dan was in a class by himself!

  • ...as do friends, time and events hurry us along like a song with receding views and thankfully, a welcoming reach. (thanx 101 for this video gem with Dan's signiture written in smiles and pixels)...

  • Maine is probably the best place to live. For all you kids crazy to leave, trust me, you'll be wishing you never left in 4 or 5 years.
