I remember the Peninsula Hotel before the conspicuous but necessary 30-storey tower was added to the legendary colonial landmark 5-Star hotel. My Mom and Dad actually met each other in the lobby back in 1964. The lobby is perhaps the most swank and lavish worldwide; was and still is a place to meet for tea time, or happy hour drinks. This hotel is home to the legendary Gaddi's french restaurant, the Chesa (Swiss); both still located in the original building; and the Philippe Starck designed Restaurant/Night Club is at the top of the 30-storey tower, capped-off with a helicopter pad. The Peninsula still caters to its guests with its fleet of chauffeured Rolls Royce Phantoms.
This video shows the front facade decorated for Christmas, 2008. Beautiful, simple treatment.
From the Peninsula's front fountain I stroll past Nathan Rd, where I purchased the Panasonic HDC-SD100 AVCHD camcorder I'm shooting with, head toward the old Star Ferry to catch a ride across Victoria Harbor to Hong Kong side. The view of Hong Kong at night from Kowloon is spectacular as long as it's not muddled by all the pollution/smog which tends to settle here on its way down from mainland China's unregulated factories. Obviously it was a clear, beautiful evening.
Music track: "White Noise" by Holy Ghost!
Wow, this is a long write up. Interesting.
