It was February and we were having a warming trend. People had taken off their ski masks and scarves and some of them you sort of wished would put them back on. Some people thrive on winter and get all rosy-cheeked and energetic and happy and the rest of us look like we've been held hostage for weeks by demented criminals. I looked at myself in the mirror one morning and I was shocked at how haggard and used-up I look and suddenly I could understand why those women I tried to make friendly conversation with looked at me with such horror. As if I were a space alien.

Recorded and broadcast live from the Fitzgerald Theater in downtown Saint Paul, MN on February 7, 2009

  • Good point! I hope they don't get a hold of healthcare.

  • You actually think the government could fund or produce something of this quality? Not likely.

A little digging shows that this is a non-profit radio station, and not one that is supported by the government; the "public" in "American Public Media" is about as "Public" as the Publics in PBS is--that is to say, still entirely private.

  • You know as a conservative, A fellow who doesn't like handouts, entitlements, emoluments or junior mints, I just have to say that "Prairie Home Companion" is worth every cent of tax money spent on it. Not like those Maplethorpe pictures It preserves a wonderful part of our culture, like a museum, or a good yogurt. I love sitting next to my 1938 model 19K, eating a powdermilk biscuit, listening to Garrison hold forth while simultaneously chewing the script. Good night and God bless you all at NPR
