Media Award for Expose of Japan's Dolphin Slaughter

Japan times' features editor Andrew Kershaw and Investigative reporter Boyd Harnell share US Humane Society Genesis Award for focusing the spotlight on Japan's barbaric dolphin slaughter amid a media blackout on the secret, brutal dolphin drive hunts. Harnell receives the award in Beverly Hills before a celebrity audience. He describes an eyewitness account of the dolphin cull of some 20,000 small cetaceans annually in Japan and the violence which has resulted in the murder of four activists attempting to shut down dolphinariums accross the globe. Kershaw published the breakthrough,and highly controversial,article risking possible censure by government officials who have sanctioned the cull, driven by the dolphin captive industry. Although extremely high mercury levels exist in dolphin meat, Japanese consumers are unaware of the health hazards as health ministry officials ignore the dangers and fail to post warning labels on dolphin meat.

Anti Japan comments miss the point of this video. As Boyd points out, the problem is a lack of awareness in Japan, not a lack of morals. His achievements are in changing that and the journalism behind this award has been far more valuable than even this video suggests. Boyd Harnell has guts and he is making a real difference.
