In response to Otaking's Anime Fansub "Documentary," I present a prime example that illustrates his points well: PsychoKORps' fansub of Macross 7.

As you can see in the OP and ED sequences, PsychoKORps had both romanized Japanese lyrics and an english translation, neatly placed on the bottom of the screen. No flashy karaoke you can barely read, and the lyrics aren't on every side of the screen, in every language and system of writing from Japanese to Sanskrit. No huge PsychoKORps logo all over the main titles, no mention of any of the team at all, in fact, until the tail-end of the ED sequence.

Also note how PsychoKORps handled the music in the series: the song lyrics are displayed in full in green at the bottom of the screen in small point, while dialogue is presented just above the song text in normal yellow (or blue/white, depending on who was speaking, their location, whether it was internal/external etc).

All digisubbers should pay close attention to how PsychoKORps did it, because THIS is the way it should be done. With the techniques available now, it can be done faster, cleaner, and better than PsychoKORps did it, and to take steps backwards, rather than forward is disappointing.

  • As far as the whole old Macross vs new Macross goes.. I'm enjoying watching Macross F up to this point (ep. 10; Shinsen's fansub is actually good), but it doesn't compare at all to older Macross, nor does it feel like it.

For the record, I'm not a huge fan of Macross 7. lol

  • That was done intentioanlly... in case you didn't notice, they translated the staff names and positions and placed them over the original kanji, so as to NOT CLUTTER THE SCREEN WITH GARBAGE.

Who cares about the original Japanese credits being visible when likely over half your viewing audience can't read it anyway? Plus it's being translated and proper credit is being given. Most fansubbers put their own names over/next to the original Japanese instead, often w/o translating the original staff

  • Oh, and incidentally... LOOK AT HOW NICE MACROSS 7 LOOKS! It's my favourite TV show of all time for a good reason. And the music is insanely good. ANd the opening sequence is probably the best I've seen.

  • The music in the show is great, isn't it? And the OP/ED themes are awesome, too. I especially love the 2nd ED theme("dakedo baby!!").

Doesn't this all make you feel like an oldfag? It kinda does for me, but then when I compare digisubs to oldschool VHS fansubs, I don't feel so bad about it. lol!

  • Now THAT's how fansubs are supposed to be done! Yes, fansubs ARE the cancer that's killing the anime industry, but if you're going to do a fansub, translate the dialogue into SMOOTH English, don't use any shitty karaoke effects, don't use any crazy fonts, and don't smear your e-penis all over the show!

  • Why the hell would you want kanji on kareoke? If you can understand the kanji then you don't need the subs.

  • @Haiyami Yeah, you tell 'em! I see reason and agree with pretty much all of what you said.

  • @Conchobhar don't you know? anime has to be watched in 7000x3000 pixel resolution, with a different font and colour used to subtitle each character's dialogue!

  • If all fansubs did their work as psychoKORPS did with macross 7... and that was on a time when PCs weren't easy to find and use as today. I wonder what PsychoKORPS staff is doing these days... those news fansubs had a lot to learn with these guys...

also, i'm watching Macross7 right now and i find their translation and typesetting very good!

Also, I share the same opinion as @GetterRay and @AirCooledMan2006

  • @DarkJak2050

Hell yeah!! I totally agree with you

    on that one.

  • @OtaKing77077

Code Geass is not made by Clamp.

Clamp only worked on the characters

    design.

I woudn't watch it dubbed either.

Some things are just better off not being

    dubbed. Gundam comes to mind.

  • for what it is. Damn it didn't do that on purpose.

  • Have you ever considered that it's a different bunch of people that watch different things or that in todays age people are spoiled and can't enjoy something

  • Yes they do, sadly enough. You should see the complaints on R1 anime DVD-rips that dare to use the same subtitles that were on the DVDs. Because apparently yellow subs look "ugly, like someone pissed on the screen." As opposed to green subs where somebody sneezed on the screen, red subs like somebody bled on the screen, white subs where somebody jizzed on the screen, etc.

  • No way, people actually complain when a sub is barebones like this?
