Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: I'm 15 years old and I play guitar every day when I come home from school. I can't really solo or play much other than the basic two note power chords yet... But, one thing that baffles me is how the 80's rock guys play power chords with more than two notes. Can you tell me what the heck they're doing? How do you play power chords with 4 or 5 strings? Can you do a lesson on power chords? Thank you for making your YouTube channel & all the great guitar lessons. Maybe one day - I'll even understand all of them.
- Bill, Fort Worth Texas

A: Power chords emphasize the strength of the perfect 5th by dropping the 3rd from the triad. It's a strong resonating sound that's made even more powerful when an amp is switched to the overdrive channel. The strength of the power chord get's compounded when we pile on other unison's, or octave's of the original roots and fifths across the guitar strings. That is the concept of how those 80's rock players get power chords with 4 or even 5 strings to them.

  • @vampire96blood Good luck bro. Long live metal!

  • great work man,, tnx

  • @xDet3rmin4tionx same i always knew them as root 5th and octave

  • I always thought a power chord had the octave added

  • Fuckin' google adds -____________-'''

  • pause at 52 sec and when he's playing that chord it looks like he's giving you the finger i know it's immature but i know i'm right

  • i think ive got almost everything down except the strummng. for some reason its really hard for me to only play 2 or 3 strings :/

  • hi! can you give me tips on playing power chords with thumb over?

i see you're playing power chords with thumb over (in the video intro). i kinda picked up that technique since i started playing, and was having second thoughts on switching to thumb-behind-neck while playing power chords (it's gonna be a pain in the ass, i know -.-).

  • i love you man, one day if i ever get to stardom, i'll visit you. youre one of the reasons why i could keep up with all this riff's i'm doing. btw gratz on the 200th vid keep rockin man, and for some reason i'll just head bang along the heavy metal way \m/.
