SRI (System of Rice Intensification) Farming is another great addition to the Permaculture designer's toolbox. Originally conceived in Madagascar, the system has spread throughout the world, with an increasing number of rice farmers adopting the organic techniques, which typically produce far higher yields than traditional rice farming.
Meet Dr. Yang Saing Koma (who introduced SRI to Cambodia in 2000) and Uncle Mao as they guide us through the steps of SRI Farming. In Khmer language with English subtitles, this is a shortened version of the video originally created by Mind's Eye Productions for CEDAC (The Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture).

  • This is an interesting system.

Why do they transplant though ? I don't know much about rice growing, so it always puzzled me; why not let them grow where they sprouted, like the Fukuoka Method ?

  • Selective breeding, only the healthiest plants are chosen, improving yields in the longer term.

  • I thought that hoeing or turning the earth was contrary to permaculture principles?

  • permaculture is a no-dig system, not a no-hoe system :-)

  • I don’t think Khmer farmer like this way too much work.

  • Where can I download the full video of this?

  • That is some language they're speaking.

  • @Velkoze1 We're all big fans of Masanobu Fukuoka here at PermaScience. However SRI farming is more of a high yield, non chemical alternative to current high energy input monoculture rice growing, rather than an alternative to Fukuokas methods.

  • This Method is very similar to the Fukoka Method from Japan. Great Video...Thanks for making english subs!
