1970 was the year of love with the actresses.

- Jane Alexander playing a white woman torn between race relations and the lover of her life, a black boxer, in The Great White Hope.

- Glenda Jackson playing an odd, dominating artist who seems to be obsessed with the idea of love, but doesn't much enjoy it when she has it, in Women In Love.

- Ali MacGraw playing the quintessential love couple, a rich boy and a poor girl, in the amazing Love Story.

- Sara Miles playing a young, wild eyed woman who marries a spinster schoolteacher out of desperation, only ending up falling in love with a solider in Ryan's Daughter.

- and Carrie Snodgress playing a tortured and emotionally abused housewife who finds unexpected and doomed love with a gigolo in Diary Of A Mad Housewife.

  • Jane Alexander was robbed! She gave the best performance by far... but the surprising thing was not that she didn't win... it was that she was even nominated for a role which was back then so controversial. This was just 3 years after the tame but taboo "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" ... WHICH was wonderful, but PAINFULLY proper!

  • only saw glenda and carrie ...... like carrie more
