Ok I have gone through and read almost all of the comments. Thank you for sharing your opinions even if your opinions don't match up with mine they are still important.

I believe that slaughter is necessary as of now due to the horrible over breeding that is going on in the US at this time. Until we can solve that problem, we will need some way to get rid of the excess horses. Yes that does sound horrible but it's sadly true.

I would like to add that just because I made this video, it doesn't mean I am some soulless horrible person who wants to kill horses. Quite the opposite actually. I have 3 horses. One is 6 one is 24 and one is 27. The 24 year old I have had for 20 years. I am only 21 mind you, my parents bought her shortly after I was born. She has been arthritic since age 16. She has mostly been a big lawn ornament since then, meaning she just sits in the pasture. She still gets love, attention, grooming, good feed, good hay, and exercise (when her arthritis isn't acting up). There is no way I would ever sell her and she will be with me until her time on earth is over. When that happens she will be buried in our hayfield along with my moms horse, who was a pasture pet due to chronic founder and who we kept comfortable and finally put her down when we could no longer keep her comfortable, and my dads horse, who was also a pasture pet for about 5 years due to a battle with EPM he eventually had a stroke and we had to put him down.

My 27 year old is still spry as a 5 year old and I was jumping him last month, I have had him for 9 years and will have him the rest of his life. Two summers ago he became very ill. We had to take him to a university vet hospital and he ended up spending a week there and about $3000. Now when we bought him at age 18 he cost us $1200. He was 26 when he got sick. People thought we were crazy for trying to save him but I wouldn't give up. He wasn't in pain, so I said try to save him. They did and I ended up being very poor for a long time because of it but to me it was absolutely worth it.

The 6 year old is my Thoroughbred mare who I bought as a completely unhandled 2 year old. She was supposed to be a hunter jumper... she doesn't like to jump. Instead of getting rid of her though, I am working on finding a discipline she does like to do which right now it seems to be barrels. She will be with me the rest of her life as well.

  • @luckyhorseshoe22 A wonderful idea. Start in Africa. There are a finite amount of resources and we are quickly exhausting them. People breed without one second of thought to how they will care for the child. People then look to Europe, North America and others as if we created this problem. You either have Birth control, or nature will give us Death control. "Band Aid" "We are the World" is good, but how many of those goodhearted celebrities still.....oh forget it. No use. Same goes for horses.

  • I helped by adopting 5 horses from a adoption center in valley center ks. If you have a horse you dont want take it to a horse adoption center, They take them for free, and give them good homes. DONT SEND THEM TO SLAUGHTER, THERE AREA OTHER OPTIONS AND ACTIONS ARE A LIE YOUR HORSE WILL ALMOST ALWAYS END UP ON A TRUCK TO MEXICO OR CANADA. there r many horses in the world and thats cause of nursery barns. ik, i have a abused race horse who was beaten cause he was not as fast as the next horse.

  • Nice to see that a loving caring owner also can see with their head.

You forgot to add in the economics, that without slaughter and in an economic downturn the price of horses has dropped, so because they are not as costly, ignorant idiots think it a great idea to pick up a cheap horse. Then when the horse rebels, they cant get rid of it, because it was so cheap, they wont spend the money getting help, so its the horse that suffers. Slaughter houses increase the prices, and help stop that cycle

  • This video shows that some really do understand the true nature of the problem. Too many horses, not enough GOOD homes for them. And too many being bred every year.

  • This is true, It's not the slaughter houses fault, although some houses treat the horses badly, there only doing there job, the real fault is the person who put them into slaughter.

  • @dravenousone I pray that the welfare of horses at large doesn't depend on you expecting all horse owners to see horses the way you do. We cant even get everyone to be responsible for their own children, what makes you think all people will see horses as pets as you and I do?? Say what you want about the HSUS, but they left my friend at a dead end when she was trying to get her gelding rescued.

  • @jmdnarri HSUS has driven over 100 miles to rescue horses, in all areas of the country.

Quit looking for excuses to make a profit off pets.

And FYI, the largest number of horses that are sent to slaughter are actually not from "desparate" owners. Maybe you should research a little before making such statements.

I just pray that you don't now or ever own horses.

  • @dravenousone HSUS does not have facilities for horses in all areas. Two years ago my best friend sold her gelding to what she thought was a good home only to find out six months later that he was being starved. Since the new owners refused to sell him back, she tried to go through HSUS and other rescue groups only to end up at a dead end. If you call HSUS in my area, they will tell you "sorry we don't deal with horses"

  • @jmdnarri They have another option.. It's called the HSUS... they have plenty of vids on Youtube and elsewhere of taking in surrendered horses....

There is no reason for slaughter... no matter how much you wish there was.

  • @dravenousone Most horses that end up at slaughter do so because the owner becomes desperate, not because they want to make a few dollars off a horse. When the owner can no longer afford to keep a horse and cant sell him, they get desperate, thats when they end up at the auction. Give people an option besides spending money they don't have to euthanize a horse that may be perfectly healthy, and kill buyers will go out of business.

  • @dravenousone When it comes time to say goodbye to my dogs (I have had several in my life) it has never been an issue of no longer being able to afford monthly board, or a $300 vet bill to euthanize them. If you want to end slaughter, set up places where people that can't afford their unsellable horses can drop them off no charge instead of taking them to auction. I think that would work very well. Now what do you do with all these horses? There is the question.

  • @dravenousone I don't think that work the way you think it would. Right now killer buyers are serving much the same function as animal shelters for dogs and cats. What do you think would happen to all those millions of dogs and cats if all the shelters were just shut down. There has been a huge push to adopt instead of breeding and buying for many years now, but we are still euthanzing millions of pets every year. Don't count on people to be responsible for their animals in hard times.
